20 Feb Astrology: Going Beyond “Your Sign”
Has anyone ever asked you, “What’s your sign?”
Of course, what they really mean is, “What’s your Sun Sign?” Which in turn is a simplified way of asking, “What celestial house was the sun passing through on the day of your birth?”
As you probably know, just that one piece of astrological information can tell us a lot. As astrologer Joanne Woolfolk once wrote,
“Your horoscope is like a painting of you. The characteristics of your Sun sign are the broad strokes that the artist first lays down upon the canvas. The artist outlines your general shape, the planes and angles of your face, the way in which you hold your body. In the same way, your Sun sign delineates your general character.”
This is why it’s so easy to see yourself reflected in descriptions of your Sun Sign. But paradoxically, it’s also why some people think astrology is total hogwash. They read this general outline of their Sun Sign and think, “Well that doesn’t describe me at all!”
Of course it doesn’t – because it’s just an outline. Those first few, broad strokes do not make a portrait!
But for a vast majority of people, this is the extent of their astrological knowledge and exposure. But if you really want to explore the depths of astrology, and what it can teach you about yourself, you’ll have to go beyond your Sun Sign, and fill in the rest of the painting…
Did you know you also have a Moon Sign? You can find out what it is by consulting this chart.
While your Sun Sign tells more about your public persona, the part of yourself that you show to the world, your Moon Sign reveals a deeper, instinctive and emotional side of your personality – the “inner self” that few people ever see.
If you know the exact time of your birth, you can delve even further and find out your Rising Sign (a.k.a. your “Ascendant Sign”), determine the arrangement of the planets in the 12 houses, and even calculate their exact degrees, angles and aspects…
The sky is the limit.
The deeper you go, the more your “astrological portrait” is fleshed out in detail – and the more you can learn about yourself and your unique path through the cosmos.
